The Aomori Prefectural Museum displays artifacts and exhibits spanning multiple floors, focusing on the cultural and natural history of Aomori Prefecture.
Following a 1967 proposal during the Meiji Hundred Year Memorial Projects Council, the museum opened its doors on September 20, 1973, in a repurposed bank building.
The museum collection includes significant Jomon Period artifacts, jar-coffins, and items from the Kamegaoka culture that represent northern Japan's archaeological heritage.

The former Aomori Bank building, designed by Koji Horie in 1931, received recognition as a national registered tangible cultural property in March 2004.
