Michinoku Traditional Wooden Boat Museum

Michinoku Traditional Wooden Boat Museum, Maritime museum in Aomori, Japan.

The Michinoku Traditional Wooden Boat Museum displays fishing vessels and maritime equipment from the Tsugaru Strait region. The collection includes different boat designs that were built to handle the specific conditions of northern waters.

The museum was founded in 1999 to preserve the region's traditional boats and fishing practices. In 2015 it became part of the Aomori Museum of History, expanding its focus to cover local heritage more broadly.

The boats on display reveal how people once worked and survived along the Tsugaru Strait through fishing. You can observe how these traditional crafts remain valued in the region's daily understanding of its past.

Start exploring from the top level and work your way down to fully appreciate the boat construction details and craftsmanship. Most visitors spend between 1 to 2 hours here depending on how closely they want to examine the vessels.

The museum preserves mudamahagi fishing boats that were specifically built for squid fishing in the cold northern waters. These vessels have a completely different hull shape and construction method compared to fishing boats used elsewhere in Japan.
