Munakata Shiko Memorial Museum of Art, Art museum in Matsubara, Japan.
The Munakata Shiko Memorial Museum of Art is an art museum in the Matsubara district of Japan dedicated to the work of the Japanese printmaker who shares its name. The collection brings together woodblock prints, paintings, and calligraphy displayed across the floors of a building designed specifically to house them.
The museum opened in 1975, shortly after Munakata Shiko received one of Japan's highest cultural awards from the government. It was founded to preserve and show his work in a dedicated space, and it has served that purpose ever since.
Munakata Shiko came from Aomori and built his reputation with woodblock prints made using very simple tools and raw, direct lines. Walking through the galleries, visitors can see how he drew from Buddhist imagery and Japanese folk traditions to create a body of work that feels both ancient and personal.
The museum is in a well-signed part of Matsubara and easy to reach on foot from nearby stops. Allow enough time to move through the collection without rushing, as there is a lot to take in across the different rooms.
The building was constructed using the Azekura method, an old Japanese technique in which notched wooden beams are stacked together without nails. This method dates back to the Nara period and is almost never used in modern buildings, which makes this museum unusual for its type.
