Gappo Park, Urban park in eastern Aomori, Japan.
Gappo Park is an urban park on the eastern coast of Aomori, sitting along Aomori Bay with a public sandy beach, stands of pine and cherry trees, and the Aomori City Baseball Stadium. The grounds also hold a small zoo, tennis courts, children's play areas, and an unpaved jogging path running through the green spaces.
The park was founded in 1895 under the name Aomori Park and contains a black pine tree that is over 400 years old, marking the route of the historic Ōshū Kaidō road from the Edo period. The path of that old road shaped how the grounds were laid out, and its trace can still be followed through the park today.
Pine trees lining the walkways were planted in memory of Japanese soldiers from the First Sino-Japanese War, while stone monuments honor the poets Takuboku Ishikawa and Matsuo Basho. Walking through the park, visitors naturally come across both military remembrance and literary tradition side by side.
The park is reachable by Aomori City Bus from the city center, and its wide pathways make it easy to move around on foot. Because the grounds cover several distinct areas, it helps to decide in advance which parts you want to prioritize during your visit.
The park holds around 670 Yoshino cherry trees, a concentration that is rare in the region. During their blooming season, the whole site transforms into a sea of white and pale pink flowers, which draws more visitors to this park than almost anywhere else in Aomori at that time of year.
