サザンビーチちがさき花火大会, Fireworks festival at Southern Beach in Chigasaki, Japan
The Southern Beach Chigasaki Fireworks Festival launches approximately 2,000 fireworks over Sagami Bay, creating reflections on the water surface. Displays unfold across the beach and bay area throughout the evening.
This summer event began 50 years ago as a small community gathering in Kanagawa Prefecture's coastal area. It has grown into a major celebration centered around Southern Beach.
The festival takes place during Obon in August, when Japanese families gather to honor ancestors through traditional ceremonies and community celebrations.
Visitors can use the beaches and designated viewing areas with free access throughout the event. Free shuttle buses run from Chigasaki Station to the festival site, making arrival straightforward for most guests.
The festival features firework designs by local artist Ryu Ambe with special pyrotechnic displays. These shows include rare underwater peacock formations that stand out from typical fireworks shows.
