Biyangdo, Island off the coast of Jeju-si, South Korea
Biyangdo is a small volcanic island off the northwest coast of Jeju, reachable by ferry from Hallim Port. Its center is dominated by a single hill topped with a white lighthouse, while the shoreline is edged with dark lava rock.
Biyangdo formed around the year 1002 through a volcanic eruption, making it one of the youngest islands on the Korean peninsula. For centuries it served local fishermen as a resting point before visitors began arriving to enjoy its natural setting.
The ferry from Hallim Port runs several times a day and the crossing takes about 15 minutes. There are no shops or cafes on the island, so bring water and snacks, and wear sturdy shoes for walking on rocky ground.
Biyangdo served as a filming location for the Korean drama Bomnal, which brought it to the attention of fans of the series. Some visitors have also chosen the island as a spot for a marriage proposal, drawn by the open views over the sea.
