Hallasan National Park, National park in Jeju, South Korea
Hallasan National Park is a protected area centered on a volcanic mountain that rises to about 1,950 meters (6,400 feet) above sea level. The park encompasses different landscape zones, from subtropical lowlands to cool mountain regions with alpine plants and boggy areas.
The site received national park status in 1970 to protect the island's natural diversity. It later gained UNESCO World Heritage recognition in 2007 as part of Jeju's volcanic landscape.
The mountain holds spiritual meaning for locals and visitors can encounter stone markers and small shrines along the trails that reflect this connection to the land. These quiet spots invite people to pause and feel the presence of the landscape around them.
The park is walkable with several marked trails of varying difficulty, ranging from short day hikes to longer routes taking several hours. Visitors should bring weather-resistant clothing and sturdy footwear since conditions at higher elevations are cooler and can change quickly.
The park contains an exceptional variety of plant species, including many that grow only on this island. This botanical distinctiveness makes the mountain a rare natural laboratory for researchers and a place where visitors can observe a richness of vegetation found nowhere else.
