Ecoland, Theme park in Jeju, South Korea
Ecoland is a theme park set inside the Gotjawal forest in Jeju, South Korea, where a steam locomotive train carries visitors through several distinct zones. The grounds include ponds, open meadows, and shaded paths, all surrounded by the native woodland.
The park was built to open the Gotjawal forest to the public while keeping its natural state largely intact. The steam locomotive used on the grounds was modeled after English railway engines from the 19th century.
The park features traditional Jeju-style buildings set among the trees, giving visitors a sense of how local architecture fits into the natural surroundings. Seeing northern and southern plant species growing side by side is something you notice throughout the walk.
The train stops are clearly signed, making it easy to move between zones and return to the entrance at any point. A visit during spring or autumn tends to work well, as the forest floor and canopy are both easy to see.
The Gotjawal forest grows directly on hardened lava rock, with almost no soil between the stones, which makes the survival of trees here unusual in itself. This porous rock acts as a natural filter and feeds the island's underground water supply.
