Yakcheonsa, Buddhist temple in Seogwipo, South Korea
Yakcheonsa is a Buddhist temple in Seogwipo, on the southern part of Jeju Island, South Korea. The main hall rises several floors above ground and also extends below ground, housing many Buddha statues and rooms for prayer and gatherings.
The temple was founded in the 1980s by a monk and completed during the 1990s. It was one of the largest construction projects of its kind in South Korea at the time.
Yakcheonsa is an active place of prayer where visitors can watch monks carry out daily rituals and ceremonies. The large Buddha figures inside the prayer halls draw many pilgrims who come from across Jeju Island.
The temple offers temple stay programs where visitors can take part in meditation, traditional practices, and vegetarian meals. When entering the prayer halls, it is best to wear modest clothing and keep noise to a minimum.
The temple grounds contain a natural mineral spring that local people have long associated with healing. The name Yakcheonsa itself comes from a Korean word meaning medicinal spring, which ties the name directly to this feature of the site.
