Phewa Lake, Freshwater lake in Pokhara Valley, Nepal

Phewa Lake is a large freshwater body in the Pokhara Valley positioned at about 915 meters elevation, spreading across several square kilometers of water. The shoreline is framed by steep green hills, and on clear days the snow-capped Annapurna peaks mirror themselves on the calm water surface.

The lake formed through natural geological processes in ancient times, representing a long history of water retention in this region. Its presence shaped human settlement and the development of the Pokhara Valley across the centuries.

The Tal Barahi Temple sits on an island at the center, drawing pilgrims who come to pray and observe religious ceremonies throughout the year. This two-story pagoda structure shapes how locals and visitors experience the water, marking it as a sacred place woven into daily spiritual life.

The lake is easily reached from central Pokhara, where several spots along the shore offer boat rentals for paddling or motorized trips. Weather and mountain visibility shift frequently, so early morning hours often provide the best conditions for water activities and clear views.

Commercial fish farms operate in caged enclosures on the water, providing a protein source for the surrounding area. Beyond fishing, the water feeds a nearby hydroelectric power station that supplies electricity to the region.
