Rex Cinema, Movie theater in Rochor, Singapore
Rex Cinema is a former movie theater on Mackenzie Road in the Rochor district of Singapore, situated on the edge of Little India. The building once housed multiple screening rooms and for decades was one of the most frequented entertainment venues in that part of the city.
Rex Cinema opened in the 1940s, making it one of Singapore's earliest large cinemas. It ran until 1983, when falling attendance and shifting habits led to its closure.
Rex Cinema sat in Little India, a neighborhood shaped by Singapore's Tamil and South Asian communities. The cinema regularly screened Indian films, making it a familiar place where many immigrants could hear their language and see stories from home on screen.
The building is on Mackenzie Road, which is easy to reach on foot from the Little India area and the Farrer Park neighborhood. Visitors to the area will find restaurants, shops and street stalls close by.
After closing as a cinema, the Rex building was converted into a shopping complex known mainly for electronics and secondhand goods. The original facade was kept, so the exterior still gives a hint of what the building once was.
