Japanese Garden, Japanese garden in Jurong East, Singapore
Japanese Garden is a landscaped space built on an artificial island within Jurong Lake, covering 13.5 hectares with arched bridges and stone lanterns throughout. The grounds include marble-chip pathways, a dry garden filled with white pebbles, and interconnected ponds where koi swim.
The garden was established in 1974 and was designed using elements from two important periods of Japanese architectural tradition. These historical styles shaped how the space was laid out and decorated.
The space follows Japanese design principles that encourage quiet reflection and observation of natural elements. Visitors notice how every stone, plant, and water feature is placed with intention to create moments of pause.
The garden is open daily and can be explored at a leisurely pace, with a rest house positioned midway between the two main ponds offering a place to sit. Comfortable walking shoes are helpful since the space covers a large area with paths connecting different sections.
The grounds house a small museum dedicated to turtles and tortoises, including a rare two-headed specimen that draws visitor curiosity. Monitor lizards also roam freely near the water areas, adding an unexpected wildlife element to the garden experience.
