The Hive, Singapore, Educational building in Jurong West, Singapore.
The Hive is an educational building at Nanyang Technological University featuring twelve concrete towers arranged around a central atrium. The structure spans eight floors with rounded rooms and metal balconies designed to create varied learning environments.
The building was completed in 2015 as a new learning facility for Nanyang Technological University, designed by British architect Thomas Heatherwick. This project introduced a fresh approach to how the university shaped its educational spaces.
The design encourages students and instructors to interact in different spaces throughout the building. Open areas and garden terraces serve as natural gathering points where people connect between classes.
The building contains 56 learning spaces that can be configured in different ways to suit various teaching approaches. Garden terraces on different levels provide spots for informal meetings between classes.
The exterior concrete surfaces feature horizontal patterns created through silicone molds during casting. This textured finish creates an unusual visual quality that shifts with changing light and time of day.
