Chinese Heritage Centre, Museum and cultural center in Southwest Singapore
The Chinese Heritage Centre occupies three restored shophouses on the Nanyang Technological University campus, with fifteen exhibition galleries spread across three levels. The spaces display the history of Chinese presence in Singapore through diverse forms of exhibits and presentations.
The building was completed in 1955 and initially served as Nanyang University's administration building before transforming into a cultural center in 1995. This conversion preserved the structure while connecting it to the region's early Chinese university history.
The center tells the stories of Chinese immigrants through photographs, artifacts, and multimedia displays that reflect how people built their lives and connections over time. You can see how these experiences shaped the community.
The Wang Gungwu Library within the building holds a large collection of books and educational materials on Chinese history and culture. Guided tours are available and help visitors understand the exhibitions and their meaning more deeply.
The building received National Monument status in 1998 and is regarded as the first educational structure of a Chinese-language university established outside mainland China. This recognition highlights its importance to the region's educational history.
