Alsancak Hocazade Mosque, Religious building in Alsancak, Turkey
The Alsancak Hocazade Mosque is a prayer hall located at the intersection of two main boulevards in Izmir, designed with classical Ottoman architecture and white walls. Multiple blue domes crown the structure and it functions as a key site for daily prayers and community ceremonies.
Built between 1948 and 1950, the mosque was funded by the Hocazade Ahmet Ragıp Üzümcü Foundation established by a grape merchant from Karaburun. This foundation provided the financial means to realize the project during Turkey's post-war period.
The interior is filled with natural light from rows of glass windows, creating a bright and open prayer space that reflects a modern approach to traditional Islamic design.
The mosque is centrally located in the Alsancak district and easily accessible via the two main boulevards that intersect there. Dress modestly when visiting and be mindful of prayer times if you want to enter and view the interior.
This was the first mosque built with a capacity designed to correspond with the number of churches already standing in the Alsancak district. The choice reflected the community's effort to achieve religious balance in the neighborhood.
