Alsancak, Commercial district in Konak, Turkey
Alsancak is a neighborhood in the Konak district of Izmir, sitting along the northern waterfront of the city and mixing shops, apartment buildings, and offices along its streets. The area runs parallel to the sea and connects to the rest of the city through several main roads and a railway line.
The neighborhood was known as Punta during the Ottoman era, when it was home to many non-Muslim communities including Greeks, Armenians, and Europeans. After the founding of the Turkish Republic, it was renamed Alsancak in 1925.
Walking through Alsancak, you can still see churches from the time when different non-Muslim communities lived here, including the Anglican St. John Church and the Santissimo Rosario Church. These buildings stand side by side with cafés and apartments, making the religious mix of the past visible in today's streetscape.
Alsancak Railway Station sits within the neighborhood and offers connections to other parts of Izmir and beyond. The waterfront area and the main streets are easy to walk, so exploring on foot is a natural way to move through the area.
Some of the old tobacco warehouses in the neighborhood were converted into the Izmir Architecture Center, which now hosts exhibitions and events. The buildings kept their industrial appearance, making the contrast with their current use easy to notice during a visit.
