The Cube, Modern architectural structure in Birmingham, England
The Cube is a 24-story building with silver and bronze metallic cladding arranged in geometric patterns across its exterior. Inside, it contains residential apartments, office spaces, retail areas, a hotel, and parking facilities integrated into the overall structure.
Ken Shuttleworth designed the building, with construction taking place between 2007 and 2010 as part of Birmingham's urban redevelopment. The project represented a shift toward mixed-use development that brought residential, commercial, and office functions together in the city center.
The building's metallic exterior references Birmingham's industrial past through its geometric design and shimmering panels. This connection to local manufacturing traditions appears in how the cladding catches light throughout the day, creating a visual link to the city's craft heritage.
The building is easily accessible from the city center and has parking available on-site. Visitors can walk around the structure and access public areas such as the retail spaces and lower-level shops.
The building contains a spiral-shaped central atrium that allows natural light and rainwater to filter down to the interior courtyard. This design creates an unexpected green space within the dense urban setting and provides natural ventilation throughout the structure.
