Buena Vista Barracks and Battery, Military barracks and defense battery in Gibraltar, United Kingdom.
Buena Vista Barracks and Battery is a large rectangular stone complex positioned on a ridge that overlooks Camp Bay in southern Gibraltar. The site contains buildings and fortification structures that were built for military defense and strategic observation.
The battery was rebuilt in the 1760s as a military defense position that housed different weapons systems over time. The barracks building was added later in the 1840s to expand the military installation at this location.
The barracks, designed by Major General Sir John Thomas Jones in the 1840s, served as headquarters for the Royal Gibraltar Regiment.
The site is visible from the outside and sits on a ridge that makes it easy to spot from various directions. Access can be limited since parts of the grounds are now used for commercial purposes.
A 4-inch naval gun was installed at the battery in October 1940 to strengthen Gibraltar's defenses during World War II.
