Monroe County extends across 411 square miles of rolling hills with forests, agricultural lands, and three substantial lakes: Monroe, Griffy, and Lemon.

The county was established in 1818 from portions of Orange County and received its name from James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States.

Indiana University Bloomington, founded in 1820, stands as a central educational institution in Monroe County, influencing the development of arts and education.

The Monroe County Council manages fiscal decisions while the Board of Commissioners oversees executive functions through regular public meetings at the county courthouse.

In 1910, the United States Census Bureau determined that the national mean population center was located within Monroe County, Indiana.
