Flowerdew Hundred Plantation
Flowerdew Hundred Plantation, Colonial plantation in Prince George County, United States
The 1,000-acre Flowerdew Hundred Plantation stretches along the James River, featuring agricultural fields and archaeological excavation areas from different time periods.
Sir George Yeardley established Flowerdew Hundred in 1619, naming it after his wife Temperance Flowerdew, and built the first windmill in British North America by 1621.
The plantation contains over 60 archaeological sites that reveal the interactions between English settlers, African residents, and Native American communities spanning 11,000 years.
The artifacts from Flowerdew Hundred excavations are now displayed at the University of Virginia Library's Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections.
The plantation site witnessed the construction of the longest floating bridge during the Civil War in 1864, when General Grant's troops crossed the James River.
