Upper Weyanoke, National Register historic plantation house in Charles City County, United States
Upper Weyanoke is a historic plantation estate in Charles City County featuring structures built across different periods. The property includes a one-and-a-half-story cottage from 1815 and a two-story Greek Revival residence constructed between 1858 and 1859.
John Minge built the original two-room cottage as a dependency to a main dwelling that no longer exists. This cottage marked the beginning of the site, and additional structures were added to the property over time.
The brick main house displays an urban-style side-hall floor plan, which differs from the typical rural plantation layouts of that era. Visitors notice this unusual arrangement immediately upon entering the rooms.
The property spans roughly 110 acres throughout Charles City County, Virginia. Visitors should allow time to explore the various preserved structures on the grounds, such as the original smokehouse and dairy building.
The property sits on land that was part of the original Weanoc Nation territory and preserves several original outbuildings such as the smokehouse and dairy. These structures reveal the practical infrastructure that kept a historical plantation operating.
