Weyanoke, Virginia, Plantation and archaeological site in Charles City County, United States.
Weyanoke is a plantation with archaeological sites located along the James River in Charles City County. The property spans around 1,200 acres and contains a Georgian-style mansion plus numerous excavation areas where researchers continue searching for evidence of past inhabitants.
The area came under English settlement in 1618 after land transferred from Opechancanough to Sir George Yeardley. This change marked the beginning of English control and brought shifts in land use and population that lasted for centuries.
The site shows traces of different groups of people who lived and worked here over thousands of years. Visitors can see the remains of these communities across the grounds and understand how people shaped this place together.
The property continues to function as working agricultural land and offers limited visitor access to certain areas. Keep in mind this is an active archaeological site where excavation work may be ongoing and areas may have restricted access.
Evidence of human activity here stretches back to around 6000 BC. This makes it one of the longest continuously inhabited places in the entire region.
