Roseville Plantation, Federal style plantation house in King William County, Virginia.
Roseville Plantation is a Federal style residence in King William County, Virginia, built on a brick foundation with wooden cladding across its exterior. The four-bay frame dwelling sits at the center of a larger property that includes a detached kitchen, school building, granary, privy, and a mid-twentieth-century barn with chicken houses.
The main house was built in 1807 during a period when plantation agriculture shaped Virginia's economy and society. Originally called Floyd's, the property later became known by its current name, reflecting changes in ownership over time.
Two burial grounds sit on the property: one for enslaved people and another for the Ryland family, each marking different positions within the plantation's social order.
The property covers a large area with multiple structures spread across the grounds, so allow time to walk between different buildings. Wear appropriate footwear since you will be moving through outdoor spaces with uneven terrain.
The property earned recognition as a Virginia Landmark in 2006, then gained National Register listing just a year later in 2007. This rapid succession of honors acknowledged its historical importance to the state.
