Southwest Waterfront, Waterfront neighborhood in Southwest District, Washington D.C., US

Southwest Waterfront is a neighborhood stretching along the Potomac River with residential buildings, restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues oriented toward the Washington Channel. The area spans several blocks with a mix of modern structures and historic sites that offer pedestrian and boat access to the waterside promenade.

The neighborhood transformed from an industrial and port area in the 20th century into a modern residential and retail zone. Maine Avenue Fish Market, operating since 1805 as the nation's oldest continuously run open-air fish market, stands as a remnant of its trading past.

The Arena Stage Theater and Anthem concert hall host performances year-round in modern waterfront facilities. These venues draw artists and audiences from across the region to experience music, theater, and dance in spaces designed for live entertainment.

The neighborhood offers easy access via the Waterfront Metro station and water taxis, giving visitors multiple arrival options. Walking is the best way to explore the area, as most restaurants and shops are within easy reach along the waterside paths.

Gangplank Marina houses the largest year-round liveaboard community on the East Coast, with residents living permanently on docked boats. This unusual neighborhood offers a rare glimpse into waterborne life within an urban setting.
