St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Episcopal church in Society Hill, Philadelphia
St. Peter's Episcopal Church stands at Third and Pine Streets, featuring high-backed box pews and a gallery within its brick structure.
Founded in 1758 by sixty parishioners from Christ Church, the building opened for worship in 1761 on land given by William Penn's sons.
The church witnessed early American history as George and Martha Washington attended services in Mayor Samuel Powel's designated box pew.
Regular Episcopal services continue at this National Historic Landmark, with Reverend Dr. Clarke French serving as the current priest-in-charge.
William Strickland designed the 1842 tower and steeple addition, which contains a set of eight bells for chiming.
