Spice Run Wilderness

Spice Run Wilderness is a protected natural area within Monongahela National Forest featuring thick forests and mountain streams flowing through varied terrain. The landscape rises from roughly 2,000 to 2,800 feet (600 to 850 meters) and contains multiple water systems that create different habitats throughout the property.

The area was privately owned by a lumber company in the early 1900s before the US Forest Service acquired and protected it during the 1920s. It has remained part of Monongahela National Forest as a designated wilderness since then.

Named after the native Lindera benzoin shrub, the wilderness preserves natural habitats for 230 bird species and nine federally protected animal species within its boundaries.

Access to the area is challenging and requires either crossing a river on foot or hiking from nearby state forest areas. Visitors should be prepared for remote backcountry conditions and varying terrain throughout their visit.

The area contains three major watershed systems with cold mountain streams that support native trout populations in their waters. These watercourses are notable for remaining unaltered and providing habitat to specialized aquatic species.
