Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, Mountain lodge in White Mountains, New Hampshire, US
Moosilauke Ravine Lodge is a group of wooden buildings set at the base of Mount Moosilauke in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It offers bunk-style sleeping quarters, communal dining rooms, and common areas used by hikers heading into the surrounding peaks.
The main building was constructed in 1938 as a ski lodge and served that purpose until the 1950s, when the rise of larger ski resorts in the region drew skiers away. It gradually shifted into a hiking base and has been used that way ever since.
The lodge is run by Dartmouth College students and alumni, who cook communal meals served family-style at long wooden tables. Sharing dinner with strangers from the trail is a normal part of any stay here.
The lodge is open from May through November and takes reservations by phone rather than online. Trails to the summit are long and exposed near the top, so an early start is a good idea regardless of the season.
The lodge has no cell service or internet access, which is not a choice guests make but simply a fact of its location deep in the hills. For many visitors, it turns out to be the most memorable part of the stay.
