Summer Island Site, Archaeological site in Delta County, Michigan, United States.

Summer Island Site is an archaeological place in a sandy meadow on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, near Lake Michigan. The ground sits about 20 feet (6 meters) above a natural harbor and roughly 40 feet (12 meters) from a canoe landing spot.

The ground was used by different groups over more than 1500 years, from early woodland settlements through contact with Europeans. Digging done in the 1960s and 1970s exposed several layers showing repeated occupation across different time periods.

The site held meaning as a gathering place for people across many centuries, especially during warmer months. The way inhabitants left behind their tools and traded goods reveals their relationship with this harbor area.

The site is protected as a registered heritage place and excavation area, so access is limited and requires permission. Visitors should check ahead with local authorities or museums to learn how they can view the ground.

The ground shows an unusual long story of seasonal use, with people returning again and again to the same place. This repeated arrival across many generations makes it a rare example of lasting connection to one particular spot.
