Film Streams, Independent film theater in North Downtown Omaha, United States.
Film Streams is a nonprofit movie theater in North Downtown Omaha, Nebraska, operating two screening rooms inside the Ruth Sokolof Theater. The building sits within the Saddle Creek Records development complex, giving it an address in a creative corner of the city.
The Ruth Sokolof Theater opened in July 2007, bringing independent and artistic cinema to Nebraska at a time when that kind of programming was hard to find in the state. The opening established Film Streams as a lasting presence for non-mainstream film in the region.
Film Streams programs international films, documentaries, and independent works that you would not find at a mainstream multiplex. Filmmaker conversations held throughout the year let the audience speak directly with the people behind the films.
The theater has two rooms of different sizes, which is worth keeping in mind when choosing your seat. Free parking is available behind the building, and reduced admission is offered for several visitor groups including students and cyclists.
The theater takes its name from Ruth Sokolof, a teacher who worked with children with visual impairments and had no direct connection to the film world. Her family supported the arts and helped fund the building, which is why her name is now on a cinema.
