Smurf Mountain, Dark ride at Kings Dominion, Virginia, US.
Smurf Mountain was an indoor dark ride at Kings Dominion amusement park in Virginia. The ride moved guests through a themed mountain structure filled with lit scenes and animated figures from a popular cartoon.
The attraction opened in 1979 under the name Journey to the Land of Dooz and was renamed Smurf Mountain in 1984 after a full redesign. It closed in 1995 after running for over fifteen years.
The ride featured characters from a popular cartoon series that were designed to appeal to families with young children visiting the theme park. It reflected how entertainment venues in the 1980s used licensed characters to draw visitors and create attractions specifically for this audience.
The ride was inside Kings Dominion, which has clearly marked paths throughout the park to help visitors find each area. Because it was a fully indoor attraction, it offered cover on rainy or hot days.
After closing, the mountain structure was reused to house a different coaster that ran from 1998 to 2019. The building stood for roughly four decades in total before being torn down.
