Neunkirchen, District capital in Saarland, Germany
Neunkirchen is a district capital in Saarland that sits on both banks of the Blies river at roughly 250 meters (820 feet) elevation. The town combines residential neighborhoods with commercial streets and houses central administrative offices serving the wider region.
The district administration moved here from Ottweiler in 1974, turning the town into the new regional seat. This shift marked an important reorganization of local government structures in the postwar decades.
The name comes from medieval times and may refer to nine churches or chapels that once stood in the area. Today the town serves as a meeting point for people from surrounding communities who visit offices, shops and public squares.
The administrative center coordinates services for seven municipalities including Ottweiler, Eppelborn, Illingen, Merchweiler, Schiffweiler and Spiesen-Elversberg. Visitors can find regional offices and services in buildings near the river.
The district coat of arms displays three symbols: the Nassau lion, the Ottweiler rose and the wheel, representing different territorial rulers from past centuries. Vehicle registration plates changed from OTW to NK when the administrative seat relocated here.
