Thingstätte Heidelberg

Thingstätte Heidelberg is an outdoor theater on Heiligenberg hill with seating arranged in semicircular rows carved directly into the slope. The venue sits surrounded by forest and trees, creating a natural amphitheater setting.

The site was built in 1934 and 1935, making it one of the largest outdoor theaters of its era. After the war, it was used by different organizations and has since transformed into a cultural space.

Originally designed as a gathering place, the theater now hosts diverse performances where visitors experience forest silence combined with artistic events. People use the venue for theater, concerts, and festivals, giving it an active role in Heidelberg's cultural life.

The venue sits on forested slopes and is best reached on foot via hiking paths through the woods. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as trail conditions vary depending on weather.

The venue was originally built for mass gatherings but underwent a complete change in purpose after 1945. Artists and musical groups then used it for entirely different purposes, giving the site an unexpected second story.
