Großer Daumen, Mountain summit in Allgäu Alps, Bavaria, Germany
Großer Daumen is a mountain summit in the Allgäu Alps standing at 2,280 meters. It forms part of a distinctive chain of peaks known for its pronounced ridge formations.
The peak entered regional mapping records during systematic Alpine surveys in the 20th century. Its place in local mountaineering knowledge became firmly established through these early documentation efforts.
Local mountaineering groups maintain the network of paths leading to the summit, preserving traditional Alpine climbing routes for future generations.
The summit is reachable from Höfatsblick Station on the Nebelhorn Cable Car starting point at approximately 1,920 meters elevation. From there, marked trails lead upward toward the ridge and eventually to the peak.
Three mountain lakes - Laufbichlsee, Koblatsee, and Engeratsgundsee - sit at the base of the mountain forming a natural lake grouping. These waters serve climbers as landmark features and water sources along the ascent paths.
