The University of Duisburg-Essen spreads its facilities across two separate campuses that together house twelve faculties serving more than 40,000 students. Each campus maintains its own lecture halls, laboratories, libraries and canteens, linked by a regular shuttle service running between the two locations.
This institution came into being in 2003 when Gerhard Mercator University of Duisburg joined with the University of Essen to form a single combined body. Educational foundations in Duisburg reach back to 1555, when an academic teaching establishment was first set up there.
Students from 130 nations contribute to academic research across five main areas, including water science, nanoscience, urban systems, and medical technology.
Both sites sit in different parts of the region and are each reachable by public transport. An internal shuttle bus runs regularly between the campuses, allowing visitors to explore both areas in a single day.
More than 250 study programs are offered here, connecting academic learning with industrial partnerships throughout the Ruhr metropolitan region. Cooperation between the institution and local industry gives many students hands-on insight into applied research and development.
