Herod's Temple, Temple in Jerusalem, Israel
The temple covered 40 acres with limestone walls reaching 158 feet in height, featuring multiple sacred courtyards and ceremonial spaces for worship.
Constructed around 20 BCE under Herod the Great's rule, this temple stood as a renovation of the Second Temple until Roman forces destroyed it in 70 CE.
The temple required Jewish men to visit three times annually during major festivals, with strict regulations determining access to different areas based on gender and religious status.
The outer courtyard, known as the Court of the Gentiles, remained open to all visitors while inner sections maintained increasing levels of restricted access.
The temple's engineering included massive stone blocks weighing up to forty tons, fitted together without mortar and remaining stable through precise architectural techniques.
