Musashi Kokufu

Musashi Kokufu was the administrative center of Musashi Province and now appears as an archaeological excavation site in Fuchū. Exposed foundations reveal a rectangular complex with administrative buildings arranged around a central hall.

The site functioned as an administrative center from the early 8th century to the late 10th century. During this period, buildings evolved from wooden construction to those with stone foundations.

Pottery and roof tiles found here bear district names that reveal how the provincial administration was organized. These artifacts help visitors understand the governance structure of ancient Musashi Province.

The site displays informative panels and preserved dig areas for visitors to explore. Its location near Ōkunitama Shrine and Fuchū Station makes access straightforward.

The excavations reveal a rare transition from wooden posts to stone foundations that took place during the 8th century. This architectural shift provides insight into technological advancement in ancient Japan.
