Hakuchō Bridge

The Hakuchō Bridge spans 1380 meters across Muroran Bay, featuring white-painted steel towers that reach 140 meters into the sky.

The construction of this engineering project began in 1985 and required extensive testing to ensure stability in cold, snowy conditions before opening in 1998.

The bridge bears the name Hakuchō, meaning white bird in Japanese, reflecting its appearance of spreading wings over the waters of Muroran Bay.

Due to strong winds in the area, the bridge restricts access to pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles, permitting only vehicle traffic across its four lanes.

The bridge structure incorporates fifteen precisely aligned tower sections, achieving a mere 13-millimeter deviation during the assembly process.
