Japanese Cypress at Kurasawa, Ancient cypress tree in Okutama, Japan
The Japanese Cypress at Kurasawa is an ancient giant rising 34 meters high in the dense forests of Okutama, with a trunk circumference of about 6.3 meters. This massive tree dominates the surrounding woodland and serves as a natural landmark in the area.
Forest scientist Shizuro Honda recognized this tree as Japan's finest specimen through his published work in 1904. This expert acknowledgment established it as a valued natural treasure of the region.
The tree connects to the nearby Kurasawa Limestone Cave and holds spiritual significance for those who visit and pray at this location.
The tree is reachable by a 20-minute walk from Kurasawa bus stop, which connects from JR Okutama Station via the Nishi Tokyo bus line. The path goes through the forest and is fairly straightforward, though sturdy shoes help on the uneven ground.
About 5 meters above ground, the main trunk splits into nine large branches in an uncommon botanical form. This rare branching pattern makes the tree easily recognizable and gives it a distinctive shape not often seen in such ancient cypresses.
