The museum encompasses architectural monuments, residential buildings, and religious structures from the lower Don region dating from the 17th to 19th centuries.

The museum, established in December 1970 following Nobel laureate Mikhail Sholokhov's initiative, preserves the former capital of Don Cossacks until 1805.

The museum collection contains 68,000 objects, including 57,000 main exhibits that display Don Cossack traditions through household items and ethnographic materials.

The museum offers guided tours, hosts twenty annual exhibitions, and maintains permanent displays about Don Cossack history at Sovetskaya Street 24 in Starocherkasskaya.

The museum received several artifacts through exchanges with major Russian institutions, including items from the State Hermitage Museum and State Historical Museum.
