Starocherkasskiĭ istoriko-arkhitekturnyĭ muzeĭ-zapovednik

This museum-reserve in Rostov Oblast preserves architectural monuments, residential buildings, and religious structures from the 17th to 19th centuries in the lower Don region. The site contains thousands of objects including houses, churches, and administrative buildings that show how a Cossack settlement looked during this period.

This location served as the capital of the Don Cossacks until 1805, when the seat of power moved to a different place. The museum-reserve was established in 1970 to preserve this earlier period of importance.

The place is named after the Cossacks who made their home here, and the streets still reveal their way of life through historic buildings and everyday objects. Walking through the settlement, you can observe how these people lived and worked by examining the preserved dwellings and their furnishings.

The site is located along Sovetskaya Street and is best explored on foot, with guided tours available to visitors. The best time to visit is between late spring and early autumn, when the weather is mild and the pathways are easy to navigate.

The institution acquired many of its most valuable pieces through exchanges with major Russian museums, including items transferred from the Hermitage and the State Historical Museum in Moscow. This collaboration with prominent institutions allowed it to assemble a collection that tells the Cossack story in a distinctive way.
