Arch of Septimius Severus

Arch of Septimius Severus, Roman triumphal arch in Latakia, Syria.

Description

The Arch of Septimius Severus is a four-sided stone structure with Corinthian columns located where ancient trade routes crossed in eastern Latakia. It combines four arches in a compact, cube-like design at this important meeting point.

History

Built around 183 CE when Roman power was expanding, it marked the eastern boundary of ancient Laodicea ad Mare. This strategic location remained significant for many centuries afterward.

Culture

The monument reflects Roman building methods through how its stones fit together precisely and how the columns support the structure above.

Practical

The remains stand in a public area near Port Said Street and are accessible year-round. The central location makes it straightforward to visit and take your time examining the structure.

Did you know?

Its block-like shape differs significantly from other Roman arches of that era, helping it survive multiple earthquakes in the region. This unusual design actually proved advantageous for its long survival.
