Al-Kahf Castle, Medieval castle in Tartus Governorate, Syria
The castle extends along a high rocky ridge between two deep gorges, featuring thick defensive walls and strategic watchtowers at its perimeter points.
Built in 1120 by Saif al-Mulk ibn Amrun, the fortress changed ownership to Ismailis in 1138 and remained their stronghold until Mamluk capture in 1273.
The castle served as headquarters for Rashid ad-Din Sinan, leader of Syrian Ismailis, who established diplomatic connections with European nobles through this location.
Visitors can reach the castle ruins through guided tours from Tartus, with the site maintaining seven ancient water cisterns within its central section.
The fortress stretches 170 meters along its western section, incorporating a flat area with minimal structures except for outer walls and an end bastion.
