Saint George's Monastery

Saint George's Monastery is a Greek Orthodox house of worship in Al-Mishtaya featuring Byzantine stone construction with a triple-arched entrance. The building is supported by two central columns of ancient origin, and a thirteenth-century chapel sits beneath the courtyard.

The monastery was established in the 5th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. It underwent major restoration in 1857 while keeping its original architectural elements intact.

The wooden iconostasis inside displays painted icons showing scenes from Christ's life. These religious images shape how visitors experience the interior and reflect centuries of Christian devotion here.

The monastery sits in a rural area and is best reached on foot or by local transport. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing and be aware of weather conditions, as there is little shelter from sun and wind.

The monastery holds a manuscript written by Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab in 635 that addresses relations between Muslim and Christian communities. This historical document shows early efforts toward peaceful coexistence between the two faith groups.
