Melkite Catholic Archeparchy of Laodicea, Catholic Archieparchy in Latakia, Syria
The Melkite Catholic Archeparchy of Laodicea is a religious administrative jurisdiction extending across the Syrian governorates of Latakia and Tartus along the Mediterranean coast, encompassing 18 parishes. It serves a community of approximately 14,500 registered Catholics under the leadership of Archeparch Georges Khawam.
The archeparchy was established on April 28, 1961, through Papal bull Qui Dei consilio issued by Pope John XXIII, taking territory from the Melkite Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Tripoli. This creation restored an ancient episcopal see that previously existed only as a titular designation.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Annunciation serves as the main worship center, where services follow the Byzantine Rite within the Melkite Greek Catholic tradition.
The archeparchy is accessible to visitors through its cathedrals and parish churches along the Syrian Mediterranean coast. It is advisable to check current local conditions and opening times before planning a visit.
The jurisdiction embodies the restoration of an ancient episcopal see that survived for centuries only as a titular designation before becoming active again in 1961. This heritage connects the modern Catholic community with a long Christian history of the region.
