Kuzucubelen Castle

Kuzucubelen Castle, Medieval fortress in Mezitli, Turkey

Kuzucubelen Castle is a medieval fortress featuring a two-story rectangular watchtower built with stone and thick walls. The structure includes multiple openings for archers and retains most of its original height despite damage to one side.

Built in the 12th century during the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, this fortress guarded important trade routes between the Mediterranean coast and Cappadocia. It served as a strategic checkpoint to monitor movement through the mountain passes.

The fortress sits near Kuzucubelen village, where the Tahtaci community continues to observe their customs in the Taurus Mountains. You can sense the long presence of these people in the region through the landscape and local traditions.

The site sits in a mountainous area and requires good footing on uneven terrain to explore properly. Best visited in clear weather so you can fully take in the surroundings and examine the tower's condition.

The lower level of the tower functioned as a water cistern for the garrison, allowing soldiers to store water during sieges. This practical design shows how builders made use of every space for survival.
