Mersin Lighthouse, White navigation tower on Mediterranean coast in Mersin, Turkey
The Mersin Lighthouse is an octagonal cylindrical stone tower standing on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. It flashes three white signals every ten seconds to help ships navigate safely through the waters.
The lighthouse began operations in 1865 and underwent complete reconstruction in 1955 to maintain its navigational role. This rebuild was necessary to meet the changing needs of maritime traffic in the region.
The lighthouse functions under the Directorate General of Coastal Safety of Turkey, maintaining maritime navigation standards along the Mediterranean coast.
The tower stands about two kilometers from the harbor entrance, and its light is visible for over 15 nautical miles. Visitors can view the structure best from the water or from nearby waterfront areas near the harbor.
The tower uses a modern halogen lamp system today that is much brighter than the kerosene and acetylene lights it once used. This technological change significantly improved the safety and reliability of maritime guidance in the area.
