Mufti-Jami Mosque, Ottoman mosque in central Mersin, Turkey
The Mufti-Jami Mosque is a prayer house from the mid-1800s in central Mersin with a square floor plan and stone walls. The roof is made of wooden framing, and on the north side there is a fountain for ritual washing before prayer.
The building was completed in 1884 under the direction of Mufti Emin, a respected religious leader in the city. Beside the mosque functioned a school for religious studies, which gave the prayer house an important role in community life.
The name comes from Mufti Emin, the religious official who commissioned its construction. Visitors notice the quality of the stonework and the simple interior arrangement that creates space for prayer.
The building is located in an accessible area and is open to visitors who conduct themselves respectfully. Before entering the prayer hall, take time to observe the surroundings and washing facilities to better understand how the place functions.
Three tombs in the eastern section hold the remains of Mufti Emin, his wife, and their son. These burial places allow visitors to directly witness the personal contribution of this family to the founding and life of this place.
