Muğdat Mosque, Modern mosque in Yenişehir district, Mersin, Turkey.
Muğdat Mosque is a place of worship in the Yenişehir district of Mersin, built around a large main prayer hall with additional rooms on several levels. The complex also houses a conference room, a library, a guest house, a medical clinic, and a supermarket in the basement.
Construction began in 1987 and was completed in 1998, placing this mosque among the largest built during the Turkish Republic period, after Kocatepe and Camlica. It rose during a period when Mersin was growing rapidly and the city needed new facilities for its residents.
The mosque is named after al-Badri al-Mugdat ibn Amr, a figure from early Islamic history, which reflects a link between Turkish and Arabic religious tradition carried directly in the name. On Fridays, the prayer hall fills with worshippers from the surrounding neighborhoods, giving the space a strong sense of community life.
The mosque sits in the Yenişehir district and is easy to reach by public transport. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times, but should wear modest clothing and remove their shoes before entering the prayer hall.
After its completion in 1998, the building received two more minarets and a second prayer hall, making it a rare example of a mosque that grew considerably after its opening. The supermarket in the basement is also an unusual feature, setting this complex apart from most other mosques in the region.
