Crescent Park Looff Carousel, Historic carousel in East Providence, Rhode Island.
The Crescent Park Looff Carousel is a wooden ride built in 1895 with sixty-two hand-carved figures and four chariots arranged in a circular structure. Colored glass windows in the roof cast light onto the figures and provide decoration throughout the interior space.
Charles I.D. Looff built this carousel in his Brooklyn factory in 1895 as a demonstration model to show potential customers his craftsmanship. The ride remained in operation at this location and grew in importance as an example of late 1800s amusement park design.
The hand-carved figures represent traditional American folk art that craftspeople valued as expressions of skill and creativity. Visitors today can see how this craftsmanship shaped what people considered worthy of display and preservation.
The ride operates during warmer months only, so plan your visit accordingly with seasonal timing in mind. Visitors should check ahead to confirm when the attraction is open and be prepared for crowds during peak season.
The ride has rotated so many times since opening that if all those rotations were stretched out, they would equal many trips around the entire planet. This distance reflects the enormous number of visitors who have experienced this attraction across generations.
