Old St. Mary's Church

Old St. Mary's Church is a historic Catholic church with distinctive cream-colored brick walls and a prominent tall spire. The building displays Greek-Ionic architectural features and round-topped windows, located at the corner of Kilbourn and Broadway in downtown Milwaukee.

The church was constructed in 1846 by German Catholic immigrants and represents the oldest standing church building in Milwaukee. It received National Historic designation in 1973 in recognition of its historical importance to the city.

This church served as the spiritual center for Milwaukee's German immigrant community and remains a gathering place for worship. The interior reflects the devotion of those early settlers through its religious artwork and traditional liturgical space.

The church is centrally located in downtown Milwaukee and easily accessible to visitors. Daily Mass services take place regularly, and those wishing to explore the architecture should plan visits outside service times to avoid disrupting worship.

Three bronze bells cast in Munich hang in the church tower, installed in 1868 and reflecting the community's strong ties to Germany. A working clock mechanism added in 1860 remains functional and adds an original detail to the exterior.
