The district encompasses a significant portion of Ste. Genevieve with 824 buildings, including 646 structures that contribute to its historical significance.
Established in the 1750s as part of French Louisiana, the settlement relocated to its current location after severe flooding damaged the original site in 1785.
The district contains numerous examples of French colonial architecture, particularly vertical log construction methods known as poteaux en terre and poteaux-sur-sol.
The National Park Service maintains the Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park, established in 2020, which preserves and interprets the French colonial heritage.
The area represents the largest collection of French colonial buildings in North America, with several preserved structures dating from the late 18th century.
